You know how bacon makes everything better? I’m a believer that BBQ sauce does too and I love to try new flavor combinations using unsuspecting ingredients. Chipotle peppers, especially those in adobo sauce, have a signature smoky flavor that packs a lot of heat.

Love this recipe and that it does not contain catsup. Great flavor, a nice blend of heat, sweat, and tang. Add a tablespoon of smoked paprika and substitute a dark rum for the water. Recreats a favorite BBQ sauce I found in ST Augustine many years ago.

I love the robust flavors in this delicious barbecue sauce! I can see so many uses for this versatile sauce, too!

I made this sauce for some pulled pork butt and it turned out horrible. The tomato paste was very overbearing and we had to add 2 cups of water to get it to a “sauce” consistency. It wouldn’t even blend in the blender it was so thick. the flavor wasn’t bad and you could taste the chipotle, but the consistency made it so we couldn’t even use it.

    1. I am really sorry to hear that, Jenny. I’ve made this several times (I even have some frozen in the freezer) and while it is a pretty thick BBQ sauce, it surely isn’t that thick. Just out of curiosity, what brand of tomato paste did you use?

    2. It is a fairly thick sauce for mixing in with pulled pork. Add maybe another cup of water or as suggested above some dark rum. I found 3 chipotle peppers didn’t give me enough heat so I’m making another batch with the rest of the chipotle peppers (about 5) That should do the trick!
