This recipe inspired by the flavor-favorites of the King himself is just so full of incredible flavor you just might make it on the regular.

Elvis may have created his piled-high peanut butter banana sandwiches (likely with white sandwich bread) in all sorts of ways. But we love this recipe that combines his most favorite ingredients and results in decadent deliciousness in single servings!

Monkey Bread Worth Munching On

If you’re not already sold on this sweet recipe, let me help you make the leap to loving it!

  • It’s easy. With just a few quick steps, you can make an incredible dessert that is sure to wow a crowd. It’s almost as easy as Elvis’ favorite sandwich.
  • Chock-full of texture and flavor. From the crispy yet tender dough to the sugar mixing with bacon, bananas and chocolate, there’s no shortage of ways to tempt your taste buds with this!
  • Fast. You can whip this recipe up on the fly and have it ready before any surprise visitors even realize that you didn’t already have it prepared!

Ingredients

With just a handful of ingredients you can make this monkey bread that’s worthy of a mic drop.

  • Unsalted Butter – This is what gives our monkey bread that melt-in-your-mouth richness. It adds flavor and keeps the monkey bread moist and delicious.
  • Creamy Peanut Butter – This creamy goodness adds the essential nuttiness that makes this dish one that Elvis would approve of.
  • Brown Sugar (Light or Dark) – This helps to impart the molasses-style caramelized flavor.
  • Cooked and Crumbled Bacon – The savory, smoky notes from the crispy bacon perfectly balance out the sweetness. After you cook it, be sure to let it cool on a paper towel-lined plate.
  • Bananas – The sliced bananas act as the base and add a natural sweetness and a fruity twist. Use medium bananas for the best results.
  • Refrigerated Biscuits – This gives the monkey bread its comforting base.
  • Mini Chocolate Chips – These chips bring a burst of rich flavor to the bread.
  • Cooking Spray or Vegetable Shortening – Don’t forget this step! It ensures our monkey bread slides right out of the pan without a hitch, keeping it looking as good as it tastes.

Variations on Fat Elvis Monkey Bread

Want to switch up this recipe so that it’s your own — or even more decadent? Elvis would approve! Here are our ideas:

  • Nuttiness – Use crunchy peanut butter for added texture.
  • Sweetness – Before cooking the bacon, drizzle it with honey or maple syrup (or sprinkle it with brown sugar) for an irresistible topping that’s the epitome of smoky meets sweet.
  • Caramel – Add even more flavor by drizzling the bananas with caramel before topping.
  • Spices – Make this an aromatic treact by adding cinnamon, nutmeg, or allspice.
  • Fruit – Bring in some fruity flavor by adding a sprinkle of blueberries or diced strawberries.
  • Marshmallows – Turn this into a s’mores inspired dessert by mixing in a few mini marshmallows.
  • Eggs – Feeling like combining savory and sweet? Make this and then toss a poached or fried egg over top.
  • Extract – Add a teaspoon of vanilla to impart more fragrance and flavor.
  • Chips– Chocolate chips aren’t the only chips! Peanut butter chips, caramel chips, even toffee chips or dark chocolate chips are great options. Or go sans chips.

How to Make Peanut Butter Monkey Bread

You’re going to be saying “Thank you, thank you very much!” after you see how easy it is to make this decadent dessert.

  1. Add bananas to muffin tin. After preparing a muffin tin, line the bottom of each muffin well with 3 slices of banana. If preferred, use a fork to slightly mash the bananas before lining the muffin tin.
  2. Top with dough. Top the banana slices with 4 pieces of biscuit dough.
  3. Make peanut butter sauce. Combine the butter, peanut butter, brown sugar, and salt in a small saucepan or skillet over medium heat and melt. Stir regularly to combine.
  4. Add sauce to muffin tin. Once you melt butter and the rest of the ingredients, use a spoon to add the peanut mixture to the top of the dough in the muffin tin.
  5. Bake for the recommended time and until the tops are lightly browned before removing from the oven and allowing the bread to cool briefly. The total time May vary depending on your oven and the elevation.
  6. Flip and top with chocolate chips and bacon. Invert the monkey bread onto a platter, cover with chocolate chips and crumbled bacon, and serve.

What to Serve With Biscuit Monkey Bread

Is there really anything you need to serve with this fantastic fat Elvis breakfast? Probably not! But if you’re looking to get even crazier with your sweet treats we have a few ideas.

Try serving this with any kind of ice cream — we love vanilla ice cream, butter ice cream, or maple ice cream with pecans. You can also serve it with a simple tall glass of milk or warm cup of coffee — or get a little fancier with whipped coffee

For adults, try serving an espresso martini, coffee with Bailey’s, or hot buttered rum. Also, don'[t sleep on dusting a little powdered sugar over top.

Common Questions about Banana Monkey Bread

Why do they call monkey bread monkey bread?

Good question! The answer is actually elusive. It may have derived its name simply from the way that monkeys pick at foods or because it’s eaten with your fingers. There are other guesses, too, but no one has quite solidified the reason for its name.

What does monkey bread taste like?

This recipe for monkey bread is most typically a sweet bread that’s flavored with warm spices and has a tender texture.

What can you use instead of a Bundt pan for monkey bread?

For this recipe we use muffin tins to make smaller versions of monkey bread. You can also use a loaf pan or a sheet pan, though the latter may not have the very best results.
