Ranch pasta salad takes everything people already like about a classic cold pasta salad and gives it a little more personality. Tender rotini gets tossed with crisp carrots, celery, onion and juicy tomatoes, then coated in a tangy ranch dressing that works its way into every twist of pasta.

Why You’ll Love This Ranch Pasta Salad
- Ranch-flavored without being heavy. The dressing uses olive oil, apple cider vinegar and ranch seasoning rather than a thick mayonnaise base, so the salad stays flavorful without becoming overly rich.
- The vegetables bring real texture. Carrots and celery add crunch, tomatoes bring juiciness and onion gives the whole thing enough bite to keep the pasta interesting.
- Built for making ahead. A short chill gives the ranch seasoning time to flavor the pasta and vegetables, which makes this an excellent side for BBQs, potlucks and summer gatherings.
Ingredients for Ranch Pasta Salad
A full list of ingredients with measurements for this recipe is available in the printable recipe card below.
- Rotini Pasta – Rotini is a great pasta shape for this salad because all of those twists and ridges hold onto the ranch dressing. Cook it just to al dente so the pasta stays pleasantly chewy after chilling rather than becoming overly soft.
- Carrots – Carrots add sweetness, color and a firm crunch. Chop them fairly small so they distribute evenly instead of creating large, hard bites next to the pasta.
- White Onion – White onion brings sharpness that keeps the salad from tasting flat. Dice it finely so the onion flavor is present without dominating individual bites.
- Celery – Celery provides fresh crunch and gives the salad a classic picnic-side flavor. Use tender inner stalks if possible and dice them to roughly the same size as the carrots.
- Grape Tomatoes – Grape tomatoes add juicy sweetness and fresh acidity. Quartering them allows their juices to mingle with the dressing while keeping the pieces small enough to eat with the pasta.
- Olive Oil – Olive oil forms the base of the ranch dressing and helps the seasoning coat every piece of pasta.
- Apple Cider Vinegar – Apple cider vinegar gives the dressing the acidity it needs to balance the olive oil and ranch seasoning. It also keeps the finished pasta salad tasting fresh after chilling.
- Dry Ranch Dressing Mix – Dry ranch seasoning gives the salad its signature herb, garlic, onion and buttermilk flavor. Either homemade dry ranch seasoning or a packaged mix works.

How to Make Ranch Pasta Salad (Step-by-Step)
With a handful of ingredients and no time at all, you will be enjoying your new favorite pasta salad.
- Cook pasta according to package directions for al dente. Rinse under cold water to stop cooking process.
- Make dressing. In a small bowl, whisk olive oil, water, apple cider vinegar and dry ranch mix. Blend until combined.
- Toss pasta and veggies in dressing. In a large mixing bowl, toss together cooked pasta, carrots, celery, onion, tomatoes and Ranch mix.
- Cover and chill for 30 minutes to 6 hours before serving. Serve chilled or at room temperature.

Chef Tips
- Cook the pasta only to al dente. Soft pasta becomes even softer after sitting in dressing.
- Salt the pasta water. The dressing should not have to do all the seasoning work. Properly seasoned pasta tastes better all the way through.
- Rinse immediately. Unlike hot pasta dishes, cold pasta salad benefits from rinsing because it stops the cooking and cools the noodles quickly.
- Drain extremely well. Water clinging to the rotini can dilute the ranch dressing. Shake the colander and let the pasta drain for a few minutes before mixing.
- Cut the vegetables into similar sizes. Uniform pieces distribute better and give every forkful a more balanced mix.

Storage and Freezing
Storage: This ranch pasta salad has a sweet spot for serving and I would say that is about 6-12 hours after you make it. Let it sit too long and it gets a little gummy, but if it doesn’t sit long enough, the flavors can’t marry. It will stay good (just not A+) in the fridge for up to 5 days.
Freezing: Unfortunately, I do not suggest freezing pasta salad.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, but it will create a much creamier and heavier pasta salad. For the flavor and texture of this specific recipe, dry ranch seasoning works best.
Rinsing stops the cooking process, cools the pasta and removes some surface starch that can make cold pasta sticky.
Yes. Toss it again before serving and add a little olive oil or vinegar if the pasta has absorbed too much dressing.
The pasta probably absorbed some of the dressing during refrigeration. Toss it with a small amount of olive oil and vinegar to refresh it.
