Corn

Is it a grain? A vegetable? A fruit? The answer is actually all three! Corn is a staple in many recipes, so let me show you all the best!

Types of Corn

Because it is such a popular ingredient and can be added to so many things, there are lots of ways to prepare corn. Let’s first start by talking about the different ways you can buy corn at the store.

  • Canned – this is popular for a lot of reasons. It’s cheap, it’s easy and it has a really long shelf life. This corn has already been cooked, so all you really need to do is throw it in the microwave or in a pan on the stove to heat it up.
  • Frozen – you can either buy corn frozen on the cob or off the cob. As long as it stays frozen, it has a decently long shelf life as well. I personally prefer the taste of frozen corn over canned, just because it seems to not have that “preservative” taste.
  • Fresh – if you can find it, fresh corn is always my number one choice. There is a season in which it tastes the best, but any time you can buy it fresh is preferable in my opinion.

How to Prepare Corn

The options are really endless, but there are several ways to prepare it that I would consider the most popular.

  • Boiled – This method is very common, especially when dealing with corn on the cob. You can read about how I boil mine in my How to Boil Corn on the Cob post!
  • Roasted – roasting corn on the cob in the oven condenses the starches and sugars, giving unparalleled sweetness and flavor
