Did you know that the origin of curry dates back all the way to 2600 BCE? The time frame indicates that a mortar and pestle were used to grind up spices together, which was then used to season food.
The word curry was taken from the Tamil word, kaṟi, which means “sauce” and was known as a dish of meat or vegetables cooked with seasoning and with or without a thick sauce.
There are two kinds of curry, dry or wet. A dry curry typically is made with a small amount of liquid so that it can dry out and leave the spices covered all over the ingredients. A wet curry is has a lot of sauce which is usually made from cream, yogurt, coconut milk or cream.
Curry is made up of a mixture of intricate spices and herbs, which commonly include cumin, turmeric, garlic, coriander, and fresh or dried hot peppers or chillies. The most common types of curries that you probably recognize are butter chicken, chicken curry, shrimp curry, green curry, chicken tikka masala, or Thai curry.
Apparently over 23 million people eat curry on a regular basis! Can you even imagine that many people enjoying the exquisite flavors of curries on a daily basis?
That’s a pretty big number if you ask me! That just makes me want to join in by making this coconut curry and relish it!
