What is puff pastry?

Puff pastry is a light and flaky pastry that is made from a laminated dough. Laminated dough basically means that there are layers and layers of butter in between the layers of dough.

These are the ingredients used to make puff pastry:

  • butter
  • salt
  • water
  • flour

Making it from scratch is quite a project, which is why a lot of people prefer to buy it frozen at the grocery store. The homemade version involves wrapping a cold block of butter in dough, rolling it out, folding it over, and repeating the process until there are hundreds of layers. Plus, the dough needs to chill in between.

In the oven, the liquid in both the butter and dough evaporates, causing the layers to puff. The butter melts into the dough giving it its golden color and crispy texture.

It is a light and buttery pastry with a slight crunch to it after being baked. You can use it for everything from pastries like turnovers to danishes or even beef wellington.
