I have this immense love for donuts. I’ve actually been on a total donut kick lately. So as I was staring in the freezer looking for a midnight snack the other night, I had the most genius idea. Hear me out…a donut sundae!

What is a donut sundae you ask? Exactly what it sounds like! A gloriously sticky, sweet glazed donut topped with a scoop of ice cream and any topping your heart desires. Are you drooling yet?

Breakfast or Dessert?

Donuts are generally considered a breakfast food, but ice cream is most definitely a dessert. So what does that make a donut sundae? I’ll leave that one up to you!

When we eat pancakes and waffles, we’re drowning them in butter and syrup, so why not have ice cream for breakfast?? Of course, this wouldn’t be something I’d eat every morning; but waking the kids up with a donut sundae for breakfast on their birthday? They’d be in heaven.

You could even set up a sundae bar for birthday parties or get togethers! Provide a box of donuts with a few different ice cream options. Let your guests scoop their favorite ice cream flavor onto their donut and pile it high with as many toppings as they’d like!

Make It!

Making yours is easy. Donut + ice cream + bourbon caramel sauce + candied pecans.

Ice cream melts, so these are best eaten right after assembling. Leftovers (if there are any) ca be packaged up, but will be a pool of melted ice cream, so it is not advised.

Donut Sundae Toppings

What’s the best thing about sundaes? You can literally do anything you want with them!

Load them up with toppings, eat it plain, choose your favorite flavor of ice cream- This list is kind of infinite, but here are some of my favorites and suggestions beyond what we’ve already used.

Ice Cream

I used vanilla ice cream for mine, but feel free to change it up and use different flavors. If you’re serving these donut sundaes at a party or get together, you can even offer multiple flavors to choose from. Here are a few other suggestions that I think would work well:

I would suggest sticking to a plain donut like a glazed yeast donut, however. Having different flavored donuts might be a little chaotic with all of the ice cream and topping options too. But you make your sundaes however you’d like to!
